About Aldro

Aldro School is a co-educational preparatory school offering both day and boarding places, situated in Shackleford. Founded in Eastbourne in 1898, the school moved to its current home in 1940 and is governed by Aldro School Educational Trust Limited, a charitable trust. Boarding pupils are accommodated in two houses within the main school building, and the school became co-educational in 2021. The school aims to provide a broad and happy education that nurtures a lifelong love of learning, encouraging curiosity, independent thinking, and strength of character. Pastoral care sits at the heart of school life, with a nurturing, family-oriented environment underpinned by Christian values. The boarding provision is designed to foster independence and responsibility alongside strong personal support. Pupils come from a range of social, cultural, and professional backgrounds, with around a third boarding either part-time, weekly, or full-time. The school supports pupils with a variety of additional needs, including those with SEND and those for whom English is an additional language, ensuring tailored help is in place where needed. Provision is also made for more able pupils, as well as for those with particular talents in the creative arts and sport, both within the curriculum and through co-curricular activities.

Bursary Support

Ten to 12 full bursaries a year. Some set aside for candidates who approach the school via the Royal National Children's Foundation; and in line with the school's Christian foundation, some are earmarked for the sons of people in full-time Christian ministry.

Up to 100% fee remission

Mobile Phone Policy

Day pupils should not bring mobile phones to school, but if there is an exceptional circumstance which requires them to have one, it should be handed in to their form tutor or matron for safe keeping during the day. Boarders must leave their phones or other electronic devices in the boxes at the school office on arrival. They can be collected at the end of the day with permission from the housemaster or housemistress. Boarders can access their phones from matron's room to call home in the evenings during specific times. Weekend boarders may use their phones on Saturday evening and during the day on Sunday. Pupils must sign the mobile device policy explaining acceptable use.
