About Sylvia Young Theatre School
The Sylvia Young Theatre School is an independent co-educational school founded in 1981 by its current principal and proprietor. Based in a converted church, the school moved to its present site in 2010. The principal holds responsibility for vocational provision in the performing arts and is supported by an advisory board of executive directors, while the headteacher oversees academic delivery and pastoral support. The school aims to provide a happy working environment and to inspire pupils to achieve high academic standards and to excel in the performing arts through a balanced and challenging curriculum. Working in partnership with parents, the school also seeks to help pupils take responsibility for their own learning and to develop the skills and self-confidence to be successful in their future lives. Pupils come from a range of backgrounds, mostly from within London and the surrounding counties, and all demonstrate a talent in one or more vocational areas. Academic ability across the school is above average. The school supports a number of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities, including dyslexia, and also welcomes pupils for whom English is an additional language.
