About St Albans High School for Girls
St Albans High School for Girls is an academically selective independent day school for girls aged 4 to 18, founded in 1889 and established in the heart of St Albans since 1908. The preparatory school is located in the nearby village of Wheathampstead, where girls are welcomed from Reception age and progress through to 11, with the majority then moving on to the senior school. A large sixth form plays a central role in shaping the character and culture of the school community. The school is a registered charity and is governed by a school council of 19 governors. Pupils come from a range of professional and ethnic backgrounds, predominantly from Hertfordshire and north London. The school supports girls with a variety of special educational needs and disabilities, ensuring each receives appropriate specialist help, and many pupils speak English as an additional language. At the heart of the school's ethos is a commitment to scholarship, adventure and integrity. The school aims to nurture intellectual confidence and curiosity, encourage a lifelong love of learning, and develop a strong sense of service and responsible citizenship — helping every girl feel supported and ready to play her part in the wider world.
