About Hurtwood House School

Hurtwood House is a co-educational sixth-form school founded in 1970, set within an Edwardian country house and its extensive grounds close to Dorking. The school is family owned and run, with the proprietors playing an active role in its leadership and management. Boarding is central to life here, with eight boarding houses — two on campus and six a short drive away. The school aims to foster high achievement, creativity and professionalism within a caring, structured environment. Pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and development, both in and out of school, helping them to build independence and self-discipline along the way. The community is wonderfully diverse. Most pupils are boarders, drawn from a range of social backgrounds, and just under half come from overseas. Most students study A levels, while a small number follow an intensive GCSE Foundation course. The school supports pupils with special educational needs and disabilities, and a significant number of students speak English as an additional language, with specialist help available for those who need it. Gifted and talented pupils are catered for through extension classes and dedicated programmes.
