About Stockport Grammar School

Stockport Grammar School is an independent co-educational school for pupils aged 11 to 18, situated to the south of Stockport. Founded in 1487 as a school for boys, it moved to its current site in 1916 and became co-educational in 1980. The school operates as a charitable trust administered by a board of governors, and shares its site with its own junior school, which provides around half of the senior school's intake. The school aims to offer a challenging academic education within a caring and supportive atmosphere, encouraging initiative, independent thought, and high standards of behaviour. It works to help pupils develop into mature, responsible, and considerate individuals who are well prepared for life beyond school. Pupils are drawn from north Cheshire and the southern and eastern suburbs of Greater Manchester, coming from a range of professional and business backgrounds. The school community is socially and culturally diverse, with many of the major world religions represented. The school supports 206 pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities, including dyslexia, dyspraxia, autism spectrum disorder, and visual and hearing impairments, with specialist help provided in a variety of ways. English is an additional language for 40 pupils, a number of whom receive extra support.
