About Manchester High School for Girls
Manchester High School for Girls is an independent, selective day school for female pupils aged 4 to 18, founded in 1874 by the people of Manchester. The school has been based on its current site for 75 years and is run as a charitable trust, overseen by a board of governors. The preparatory department offers two forms per year group, including two reception classes, while the senior school runs four forms per year from Year 7 through to sixth form. The school aims to educate the whole person, encouraging each pupil to reach her potential and to develop a sense of her own value within a broad, diverse community, alongside a growing responsibility towards others both in school and beyond. Pupils come from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds, with families living within a 40-mile radius of the school. One in ten pupils receives a school bursary. The school supports pupils with a variety of special educational needs and disabilities, including dyslexia and dyspraxia, and provides specialist help where needed. English is an additional language for a number of pupils, some of whom receive specialist support. Provision is also in place for the very able, with specialist support available for those with particular talents.
