About Uppingham School

Uppingham School is an independent co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 13 to 18. The school was established in 1584 originally as a school for boys, and girls were first admitted in 1975. It operates as a charitable trust, governed by a board of trustees. The school has fifteen boarding houses, nine for boys and six for girls, with day pupils also belonging to a boarding house. Pupils in Years 9 to 11 make up the Lower School, while those in Years 12 and 13 form the Sixth Form. The school aims to achieve academic excellence and to encourage pupils to think critically and independently, with the full-boarding environment intended to provide an all-round education in which every pupil feels valued and nurtured. The school welcomes pupils from a wide range of professional backgrounds. Boarders come from homes across forty-seven counties in the UK and from thirty-one countries overseas, while most day pupils live within a short distance of the school. Support is available for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities, for those for whom English is an additional language, and for more able pupils through an academic extension programme.
